What makes a really great Northern Irish BBQ? Sheltering from the rain? Yes, of course that can be part of the fun, but that’s not what I meant. What I mean, is how better to enjoy spending quality time with your family than by getting outdoors and eating al fresco, while taking advantage of all the great local produce we have available. Also, as it is the Northern Ireland year of food and drink, we should make as much effort as possible to support and showcase local business.
In conjunction with the ‘BBQ’ product theme for July and the upcoming ‘Love NI Meat’ month in August, Tesco Northern Ireland is proud to showcase the award winning produce from Northern Ireland, which is perfect for treating your family and friends this summer. And to help them show you exactly what kind of goodies are on offer, they sent me a hamper, full of local produce, and I have been putting my BBQ skills to the test.
The first challenge was to prepare an outdoor kitchen , that could cope with with any summer showers. (Part of the solution was wearing a coat when required, but it did the trick!)
Lewis and Aaron watched on as Mr C and I got dinner cooking! Of course, BBQ’s take time, so some refreshments were required. Some Maddens Cider from Armagh, for the grown ups.
And some Raspberryade from the Maine man for the kids!
I have to say, neither Mr C nor I are very experienced when it comes to BBQ’s and I did wonder if these little diposable and portable BBQ’s would be any good, but they were just grand! Although, admittedly I did cook some Cookstown Ribs in the oven before finishing them off outdoors.
To accompany our BBQ’d foods, we had Irwin’s bread rolls, Provenance Sweet Chilli and Cranberry Coleslaw, Country Kitchen Potato Salad, Dromona Cheese, and scallions and lettuce from local suppliers.
Of course, if you don’t fancy a Northern Irish BBQ, you can still support local providers. How about a farm quality assured Northern Irish Sirloin Steak, served with Wilson’s fresh cut chips, and locally grown brocolli? Mr C said this steak was one of the best he has had!
We had great fun trying out all the local produce, and I will definately be looking for locally sourced options when I shop! If you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them.
Thanks to Tesco NI and all the contributors.
